How Jumbaya aligns with the IB Primary Years Programme

Like the IB, we believe in the learner and their identity being at the centre of all learning, especially learning to read and reading to learn.

In creating this reading programme, our team of literacy experts and IB educators have placed research on reading, IB PYP pedagogies, and student agency as their guiding compass. Our programme honours the reader's agency in shaping their own identity through their interactions with texts.

The Jumbaya reading comprehension moves recognise the mental processes a proficient reader uses to make meaning of a text.

Reader identities are not fixed but are constantly evolving as individuals develop their skills and experiences. Our instructional toolkits acknowledge that reader identities are influenced by factors such as cultural background, educational experiences, and personal interests.

Books need to serve as mirrors, windows and doors to the world (Bishop, 1990), where learners see themselves portrayed and their identities honoured, while learning about their world.

Our growing and engaging catalogue and instructional toolkits aim to do just that! At the end of reading each book, we envision students reflecting on “What made you feel strong today as a reader?” (Cunningham, 2019) and “What will you carry from this book, long after you forget the plot and characters?”
